I was desperate. Shaking all over, it felt like I wouldnât be able to put one foot in front of another, but somehow I kept doing it.
That thing inside me â the knowledge that had been growing for the past 500 years â wouldnât let me slow down. I couldnât stop because Iâd be captured. And if I was captured, everything would be over.
That unshakable certainty rose through me. It was like hands groping at my muscles. When I became too struck down by fear, that knowledge just pushed me on instead. It knew when to make me stop â when to make me run. And critically, when to make me attack. All I had to do was touch some power source and I could extract energy from it. Everything I knew about physics told me that was impossible. Even the modern galaxy with all its fancy technology would not allow a seemingly normal human female to draw energy out of some point as easily as someone squeezing water from a sponge.
But I could not deny what was right before my eyes.
I didnât know where that bull-like alien warrior had gotten to. He hadnât returned, though. Maybe heâd damaged himself when heâd been thrown off the street and tumbled down to the floor God knows how many hundreds of meters below. Or perhaps he was just taking his time. I knew there were other agents on my tail. I saw those lanky, hood-covered aliens. No matter what happened, I could only catch glimpses of their bone-white knuckles.
As Iâd already said, come high wind, a storm, or any form of attack, their hoods would not be pulled off to reveal their actual features.
They stayed back for now. I could tell they were coordinating with other agents â those I hadnât come in contact with yet â but those that were right on my tail.
As I ran now, I turned my head over my shoulder, and my hair whipped around my sweat-slicked face. My eyes opened wide as the street behind me shuddered once. It felt and sounded as if something had landed on it, but I couldnât see anything.
As a pang of fear raced over my back and up into my heart, it told me whoever it was was wearing one of those invisibility cloaks â just like the creature whoâd kidnapped me from the bounty boards. The window of time for me to get away was narrowing.
I was still holding that gel mattress. Iâd come across other technology, but this was the easiest to hold. Something within me told me it was sophisticated. Far more so than anything else I would come across in this place. I still didnât know where I was, but judging by the people Iâd passed, whoever they were, they werenât rich. They were nowhere near as clean or well-off as the other people Iâd seen when Iâd first come down to Alpha 12. And I knew I was still on the planet. It wasnât just that I recognized those lanky white-handed aliens.
